Even the “famous five” acknowledged that it is a long time since Formula One could look forward to such an engrossing year, with a grid packed with rivalries and intrigue: team-mate against team-mate, such as Button and Hamilton; old foes pitted against bitter enemies in the shape of Alonso and Schumacher, or Alonso versus Hamilton, or Schumacher against ... well, pretty much anybody.
